The Chicago Bears needed some good luck to get a Justin Fields trade market going. Sadly, things didn’t break their way. Two teams were considered prime landing spots for him. One was Pittsburgh and the other was Atlanta. Both have added prominent veteran starters to their roster in the past 24 hours. The Steelers signed Russell Wilson to compete with Kenny Pickett for the starting job. Now the Falcons have reeled in their big fish, securing 36-year-old Kirk Cousins on a new four-year deal.
With those two teams out of the picture, it is hard to find a viable landing spot for Fields. There are still teams who could be possibilities. Minnesota is one, but they’re in the same division. Las Vegas is another, but they hired Luke Getsy as offensive coordinator. The New York Giants may also have good reasons to consider it since word is they’re done with Daniel Jones. Some have also said Seattle is one to watch with the new regime uncertain about Geno Smith as their starter.
Justin Fields may have no choice but to wait.
The Bears could ship him out for a mid round pick, but that doesn’t seem like something GM Ryan Poles will do. While Fields might be inconsistent as a passer, he’s still a tremendous talent. Somebody will convince themselves he is worth the risk. All the Bears have to do is stay patient. A decision on Fields’ 5th-year option isn’t required until May 3rd, after the draft. They can drag this out for a long time. As the draft gets closer, the law of averages says somebody will get desperate.
Until then, Justin Fields will have to stay patient. The Bears won’t force the issue if they don’t have to. Poles is known for being patient in pressure situations. He’s proven he can squeeze value out of difficult trade scenarios. See Robert Quinn and Chase Claypool for reminders. Chicago seems to have kept their focus on other pieces of business in the mean time. They’ve already added help at running back and could be looking for another pass rusher. The domino will fall soon enough.
