Justin Fields made some of his own mistakes on Thursday night. Yet he was still far and away the best player on the field for the Chicago Bears. He threw for 190 yards and ran for 87. Yet the team couldn’t covert despite three opportunities inside the 10-yard line. More than ever, this game hammered home how limited the young QB is by his surroundings. The offense line got him sacked five times, and the wide receivers once again couldn’t make crucial catches when the ball hit them in the hands.
The end of the game was a microcosm of his season. Chicago had the ball with 1:49 left. Fields makes an incredible 39-yard scramble to get them to the 5-yard line. He proceeds to make two excellent throws. One was interfered with but wasn’t called. The other should’ve been caught, but Darnell Mooney bobbled it. Nothing sums it up better. Fields deserves criticism at times. The truth is he is not the biggest problem with this offense right now.
These WRs stink

Subscribe to the BFR Youtube channel and ride shotgun with Dave and Ficky as they break down Bears football like nobody else.
Justin Fields can’t make a five-star meal out of trash.
Take a look at the other 10 starters on that offense and seriously ask which of them would be playing on almost every other team right now—David Montgomery and maybe Darnell Mooney. The rest should be backups. That is the extent of the situation Fields is in. He’s trying to carry mostly scrubs to success every week. That is almost impossible for even good quarterbacks, let alone a guy in his second year learning a new system. The kid hasn’t been anywhere close to good. Still, he’s the best player on the offense.
He needs help. Lots of help. There is no way for the Bears to get it until next off-season. Until then, their goal is obvious. Do everything possible to keep Justin Fields from getting killed. He won’t survive into November at this rate. New England and Dallas are up next. His life is about to get even harder.
