Justin Fields Instagram Post Signals Luke Getsy Is Already In His Head

-

Justin Fields hadn’t been heard from since his press conference last month. After that, the only news of him was his plans to take some teammates down to Georgia to begin offseason work for next season. This wasn’t a surprise. Quarterbacks across the NFL do things like this and Fields is noted for his relentless work ethic. In fact, he even provided fans with a little update on Instagram.

It was a photo of him in a hoodie going through drills on a sunny day in Atlanta. Nothing too special, right? Where it gets interesting is the tagline beneath the post. Four simple words. “Back to the Basics.” That might come across as nothing more than an innocuous statement. However, there is a hidden meaning behind it. One that proves his new offensive coordinator might already have his attention.

Luke Getsy has a lot of admirers in the football world.

Many believe he will end up a head coach himself in the near future. He already proved himself as a wide receivers coach with the Green Bay Packers. Now he’s done the same as a quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator. According to those who have worked with him, one of his biggest keys to that success is consistent adherence to fundamentals. College head coach Joe Moorhead, who mentored Getsy, said as much.

“He had an incredible level of preparedness, of work ethic, of loyalty. He was working with receivers rather than quarterbacks, he was an expert of fundamentals and techniques.”

Former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy noticed the same thing about him.

“Luke has a great foundation. And now that he’s the No. 1 guy in the room, he’s done a very good job. He’s taken ownership of it and he’s been creative with his fundamentals. I think he’s off to a great start.”

Now Justin Fields happens to say he is getting back to basics during his work down in Georgia. That is not a coincidence. It is precisely the sort of thing Getsy would’ve had him do the moment he took over because he did exactly that during both stints in Green Bay. This offers a clear indication that the young coach has his quarterback’s attention. Never a bad sign when the two are trying to get things pointed in the right direction.
