Jaylon Johnson Absolutely Torched Luke Getsy In Recent Interview

-

The Chicago Bears knew changes were needed once the off-season began. While they managed to finish 7-10, an improvement over their 3-14 record the year before, a lot of missed opportunities lay behind them. Most of the blame for that fell at the feet of the offense, which again finished among the league’s worst in passing and scoring. That is why offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and most of his staff were fired. It is also why many believe Justin Fields likely won’t reach a fourth season in Chicago. Over the past two years, Jaylon Johnson was front and center for that entire situation.

The All-Pro cornerback appeared on All Facts No Brakes with former receiver Keyshawn Johnson. There, he was asked the hard question. Where does he stand on the Fields situation? Should the Bears move on or double down and continue building the roster around him? Johnson had been careful in recent weeks discussing this topic, but it appears he no longer has to worry about repercussions. He came right out and said what others in the locker room were thinking.

Getsy and his staff were the problem. They were ill-equipped to help Fields, or any young player, develop into the professionals they could be.

Jaylon Johnson echoes what many others feel.

Fields was never put in the best position to succeed. While he did make some progress as a passer over the past two years, the big leap many hoped for never came. This was despite the Bears finding a legitimate star receiver in D.J. Moore and retooling their offensive line. He still hasn’t passed for 3,000 yards or 20 touchdowns in a season. His outstanding mobility helps curb some of that, but people are tired of waiting for him to turn the corner. Time is running out. His rookie contract is about to expire, meaning he will become way more expensive. Chicago holds the #1 pick in the draft. This feels like the right time to pull the plug.

There is no question Jaylon Johnson disagrees. He sees the work Fields puts in. He knows the time of competitor and leader he is. If the Bears can just get the offensive staff right, everything should fall into place. That is a fair argument. Whether it is enough to sway GM Ryan Poles from selecting a QB #1 overall remains to be seen. Most experts believe the decision is all but made. Fields will be traded and a new quarterback will become the guy. The next two months will tell the story.

I keep reading the articles and projected thoughts on what or should the Bears do in this draft regarding J Fields. The one thing I keep noticing in those articles and comments is the total lack of consideration being given to the simple fact that this is a rebuilding team and while J Fields may or may not be elite, without some serious upgrades on the OL, WR, TE positions, the team will never succeed in the post season even if they were to reach it. I believe the team is sitting in a elite position to trade down and… Read more »

No QB will succeed without an extremely strong O line. Don’t delude yourself. Watch the teams that are successful in the playoffs.

Pay Johnson, trade the first pick, cut Whitehead and Jackson.
