It wasn’t evident immediately, but reviews of the early Monday Night Football tape between the Chicago Bears and New England Patriots unveiled a troubling issue. Quarterback Mac Jones took off running on scrambles twice in the first half. Both times he encountered safety Jaquan Brisker. Both times it looked like he intentionally tried to injure the rookie during slides. The first time he stuck his leg out trying to trip Brisker. The second time he kicked the safety square in the groin.
Brisker got the last laugh. He intercepted Jones shortly after the second incident, resulting in the quarterback getting benched. However, that didn’t less the rookie’s anger at what he felt were two intentional efforts to hurt him. He said as much to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune and 670 The Score. While he isn’t going to dwell on the issue, he did make it known that the NFL should do something about that.
“After looking back at it, the first slide he tried to trip me,” Brisker said. “The second time, he purposefully put his foot up. I mean if you stick your foot out there, I thought the first one was pretty dirty. Obviously everybody has seen the second one. Pretty dirty.
“I think he should get fined. Or something needs to happen.”
Jaquan Brisker incident isn’t the first for Jones.
He already had a reputation from last year for dirty tactics. He grabbed and twisted the ankle of Panthers defensive end Brian Burns after a sack and fumble that resulted in Burns’ injury. Jones escaped any punishment for it, but now after Monday night, it’s becoming harder to pass it off as an accident. This guy is developing a pattern of behavior. He shouldn’t escape punishment just because he’s a quarterback. If anything, that is all the more reason to make an example of him.
Either way, Jaquan Brisker isn’t going to lose sleep over it. He got the interception, and he got the blowout victory. Jones got nothing but further questions about his future as the starting quarterback. It was easy to hate the guy for his success at Alabama. Now he’s found more reasons to add to the list.
