Insider Hints At Team To Watch Amid Robert Quinn Trade Rumors

-

Robert Quinn is still in a Chicago Bears uniform. That is unlikely to change for the time being. Training camp is three weeks away. Despite the rampant trade rumors, it doesn’t feel like he will be moved until other teams around the league get a better assessment of what they have on their own rosters. Perhaps a few of them will realize their edge rusher situation isn’t as favorable as they hoped. Somebody like Quinn would be an instant fix for such a problem. That is likely what GM Ryan Poles is hoping for.

Keep in mind both he and head coach Matt Eberflus don’t feel any pressure to move Quinn. He’s under contract with the Bears for three more years. They have leverage in this situation to wait for an offer they feel is fair for the team. Reports indicate they’ve listened to calls, but no deals have materialized yet. Still, it feels like this is only a matter of time. Quinn wants out. He knows the Bears are in a rebuilding situation. He’d like to finish his career with a team that has a chance at the Super Bowl.

That narrows the field of options for Poles.

However, it hardly erases them. National insider Matt Verderame of Fansided covered the Kansas City Chiefs for years. He has strong connections to the franchise. That is why it was interesting he posted a tweet hinting that they are the team to watch on Quinn.

It isn’t a surprise. Their pass rush was a big disappointment last season. Chris Jones led the way with nine sacks. The next closest was Frank Clark with four. It is a big reason why the team drafted defensive end George Karlaftis in the 1st round. Rumors persist the team would like to move on from Clark and his increasingly bloated contract. Quinn would make for a great substitute.

Robert Quinn to Kansas City makes a ton of sense.

All the boxes are checked. They’re one of the biggest contenders in the AFC, having reached two of the last three Super Bowls. Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL. Best of all, Kansas City runs a 4-3 defense that would fit Quinn’s skill set perfectly. From the Bears’ perspective, the Chiefs have five picks in the first four rounds next year and 12 overall. They can easily afford the price tag it would take to land Quinn, and Poles’ strong relationship with GM Brett Veach makes such discussions easier.

Much of this comes down to how much pressure Kansas City feels to make a move.

They may wish to see what they have in Karlaftis before deciding. If the rookie flashes immediately, they may choose to ride it out with him and hope Clark rebounds. If not, then a deal for Robert Quinn could come together quickly. Smart money says the Bears will hold out for a 2nd round pick considering his dominant 2021 season and favorable contract. If they wish, the Chiefs will control him for three more years, or they could cut him next off-season for minimal dead money issues.

It’s almost certain this will be a bad year for the Bears record-wise and I’m also certain Ryan Poles knows this. Trading Robert Quinn potentially makes the record worse. But Mr. Poles is obviously thinking long-term so this might not be all bad: worse record = drafting higher every round. I think he’s playing this just right: wait to get the most you can for Quinn who cannot figure in the long-range plans.

This is a winner! Quinn to Chiefs for a 2nd and 4th round picks.

Quinn will be excellent at DE in a 4-3 whether he stays or goes. He was a little suspect in the 3-4 and that makes many of the 3-4 teams hesitant to give up picks and also have to pay his salary. I believe he will be traded during camp or before the trade deadline and it will be a win/win situation.

Trading Quinn would be smart based on his history of injuries, inconsistencies, and age. But, can Poles get a decent return for Quinn. And, if not, will Quinn play inspired football in 2022? I see this as a potential minefield for Poles and any team trading for Quinn…!
