Mitch Trubisky watched three years of tireless work go down the drain in Atlanta. It’s rather fitting that an ill-advised throw to Jimmy Graham that got intercepted might be the last snapshot Chicago Bears fans have of him. A quarterback with tons of talent who just couldn’t figure out how to read defenses.
Debates about whether he can be a long-term starter have now shifted. It’s now whether people should classify him as a draft bust. Given what the Bears gave up to get him and who they passed on as a result? It isn’t hard to see that argument. At the same time, this is a franchise that witnessed guys like Cade McNown at quarterback. So bust might be a bit harsh.
That said, there is the matter of his future. Do the Bears have any sort of plans for him beyond 2020 at this point? Not according to insider Ian Rapoport. As far as Matt Nagy and this coaching staff are concerned, Trubisky is finished in Chicago.
“From what I understand, Rich, is the coaching staff wants this to be something for the season. In other words do not expect, barring some sort of unforeseen circumstance, Mitch Trubisky back in the starting lineup for the Bears. Which means after the season, he will be a free agent.”
From @NFLGameDay: The NFL and NFLPA are reviewing the #Titans situation, and they could face discipline for not adhering to COVID-19 protocols… while the #Bears are starting QB Nick Foles and believe he'll remain as the starter throughout the season. pic.twitter.com/ND9WeBrb3o

Mitch Trubisky will try to revive his career elsewhere
So what will Trubisky’s legacy be in Chicago? Most will remember him as the guy the Bears drafted instead of Patrick Mahomes. That is harsh but inevitable given Mahomes’ incredible success already. Then again there were some bright moments. The 6-TD game against Tampa Bay. Beating Green Bay for the division title. Throwing for 300 yards in a playoff game and coming a missed field goal away from winning it.
Trubisky had far more high points than most Bears quarterbacks of the Super Bowl era can claim. His talent was undeniable. Sadly more than that is needed to thrive at the NFL level. Now the team will recommence their search for that elusive franchise guy. The QB himself will no doubt seek a new team that might give him a starting opportunity.
