A lot of Chicago Bears fans have already moved on from the Carson Wentz rumors. They were fun for about a week, but ever since the buzz began to die down people got tired of constantly talking about it. Not to mention a majority of them aren’t interested in Wentz to begin with. Despite his success in 2017 and 2019, that isn’t the player the Bears would be getting in a trade this offseason.

They’d be getting the guy who threw 16 touchdowns to 15 interceptions, took 50 sacks, and is now surrounded by accusations of being difficult to coach. Not to mention his bloated contract which would lock any team down for two years at $47.4 million. Yet the Philadelphia Eagles have operated under the belief they can get multiple 1st round picks for him. Or a 1st round pick and change.

Time has proven that isn’t the case.

The Bears and Indianapolis Colts remain the frontrunners to land the 28-year old QB. Yet all indications are they haven’t made offers the Eagles want. So GM Howie Roseman has decided to put Wentz on ice until somebody gets desperate. The problem is he doesn’t have limitless time for that. Philadelphia will owe Wentz another $10 million on March 19th. Something they’d obviously prefer to avoid having to pay.

NFL teams know this, so they have no reason to rush. It is for this reason that insider Albert Breer of the MMQB believes Philadelphia won’t get that 1st round pick they want. At least not without giving something back in return along with Wentz.

“Ultimately, I think GM Howie Roseman’s goal, in asking for so much, was to come away with a 1 and something else. At this point, I don’t think he gets a first-rounder for Wentz at all, without some strings (maybe a salary dump or picks going back) attached.'”

So where will the QB land? Breer remains confident in the same team he’s pegged from the jump. For better or worse.

“My guess is he lands in Chicago, and that’d be good for him. (John) DeFilippo played the bad cop in Philly for Wentz over the quarterback’s first two years in the league, and going there would force Wentz to confront the lingering hard-coaching question head on.”

Carson Wentz arrival to the Bears would come in two versions.

At least according to what Breer is saying. Either the Bears will give Philadelphia the 1st round pick they crave but with Wentz and a pick or player coming back. For example, the 20th pick for Wentz and a 3rd or Wentz and wide receiver Travis Fulgham. Or the Bears will get Wentz for a package that won’t involve a 1st round pick at all. Perhaps two 2nd round picks for the quarterback.

Either scenario still wouldn’t please a strong section of Bears fans. That being said, getting Carson Wentz for either of those prices could definitely be called worthwhile gambles. There is no denying the 28-year old had problems in 2020. A lot of problems. Yet quarterbacks of his talent have shown many times in the past they can rebound from bad seasons.

It’s also not like the entire season was his fault.

Philadelphia was ravaged by injuries last season along both the offensive line and the wide receivers. The quarterback did everything he could to keep the team afloat and started making too many mistakes. Trying to do too much. The problem isn’t the talent. Wentz always had it. His concerns center around two things for the Bears. Will he accept the necessary coaching to get better and can he stay healthy?

If the answer is yes to both? Then Chicago would be in business.
