In the newest episode of the BFR Podcast by Sports Mockery, Ficky and I got to talk with James Boyd, who covers the Indianapolis Colts for The Athletic. In our conversation, we talked about Justin Fields and how he performed in joint practices last week. Boyd gave us some high praise regarding the third year quarterback.
“I liked when he was just decisive. When he was decisive, he was pretty unstoppable.”
Boyd went on to say that Fields performed really well in redzone sessions, showing complete dominance. He also praised DJ Moore, saying he was truly the real deal. However, Boyd pointed out that Fields faced challenges during 11 on 11 drills.
“When we got to 11 on 11, where he ran into trouble, is when he held onto the ball to long.”
This Isn’t A New Thing With Justin Fields
When Justin Fields entered the NFL, there were worries about him holding onto the ball for too long. He’s been improving on this aspect for the past couple of years. However, since he has the ability to simply out run most defenders, it tends to get him into some trouble at times. His rare speed is a blessing and a curse. That’s why it’s important that there are reports of him working so hard on the quick passing game and mastering it. While there will be moments for him play hero ball and extend plays , it’s also okay to just throw the ball away sometimes. It’s really encouraging to hear that a Bears quarterback can lock into a mode where he’s nearly unstoppable. When was the last time Chicago had a quarterback who could do that?
