Two days left to go and the rumors are running hotter than ever for the Chicago Bears. It’s becoming difficult to sift through them all. However, one persistent nugget that won’t seem to go away? The team is on the hunt for help at cornerback and they intend to find it early in the draft. This leads to the obvious question. Are there any names that interest them above others?
Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle believes so. He has it on good authority that the Bears are secretly targeting a specific corner. One with tons of athletic pedigree who played for the best program in college football.
“Alabama cornerback Trevon Diggs is under heavy consideration to be drafted in the first round by multiple NFL teams.
That includes FaceTime interviews with the Falcons and Chiefs, among several others, according to a source not authorized to speak publicly.
Should Diggs slip out of the first round, the Texans are among the teams interested in him. A high-ranking Bears executive is enamored with Diggs and wants the team to draft him, according to a source.”
Diggs was the best defensive back for Alabama last season. He’s heralded for his mixture of size and athleticism along with a desire to play physical in press coverage against receivers. These are all things that would fit the Bears defense perfectly under Chuck Pagano. As to which executive loves him? That is hard to say.
Chicago Bears may have to move up if they really want him
NFL.com draft expert Lance Zielein compared Diggs to former Pro Bowler Aqib Talib. He’s tough, physical, athletic and has a natural instinct for the position. What has people concerned are two factors. His speed and his durability. Diggs didn’t participate at the scouting combine so people don’t know his 40 times. His tape shows a guy who can sometimes get caught trailing behind faster receivers.

Then there’s the health concerns. He suffered a broken foot two years ago and battled nagging issues in 2019. So can he handle the grind of a full season on his body? This is likely what has some teams concerned and why he could end up slipping out of the 1st round. Even so, the odds of him falling all the way to #43 where Chicago picks is remote. That means GM Ryan Pace or whoever wants him that badly will have to push for a move up to get him.
