Hall of Fame QB Tells Bears Fans to R-E-L-A-X on Mitch Trubisky

-

Mitch Trubisky has a lot of doubters to prove wrong. There are plenty of quarterbacks who have experienced what he’s going through, on and off the field. One of them is Hall of Famer Steve Young. He too entered the NFL with questions about whether he could become a true passer, overcoming issues with accuracy and tendencies to run too soon.

So asking the man about Trubisky seems like a smart idea. ESPN 1000s Waddle & Silvy show did just they. They brought the former 49ers great and current Monday Night Football analyst aboard to talk about what the young Bears quarterback has done and how he might be able to get better.

One would think Young had some skeptical views on the matter as some of his ESPN colleagues including Louis Riddick and Max Kellerman. Turns out he didn’t seem overly worried about the issues. In fact, he has a strong belief that Trubisky is figuring it out.

Young believes that with continued work Mitch Trubisky will be “fine”

“Well it’s going to be Mitch Trubisky’s show, right? I mean if he can continue to grow, and mature and gett better and better then they’re going to have every chance to go the distance. If he doesn’t, then they can be a great defense and kind of try to, you know, waddle around and get in the playoffs but you know that’s the story.

I’m kind of…I’m kind of…early in the season, you know he’s such a perfectionist. He’s such a guy that’s so coachable. ‘I want to be perfect. I want to do everything right.’ When I saw him on Monday night earlier in the season it just felt like he was very robotic. Trying to be perfect.

Now here in the middle of the of the season, he’s kind of loosening up and you saw what he can do with his legs. I just think anyone who doubts his ability to go and be one of the better quarterbacks? Everything tells me that he’s going to be just fine.”

The primary topic discussed about Trubisky was his accuracy. The bad tendency of him to miss open receivers with underthrown or overthrown passes. It’s a nagging issue that has persisted through five of six games he’s played this year. Young believes one of the core causes for it is that his head is simply overflowing with information. He’s still playing behind the defense and not ahead of it.

This is why his reactions are a tick late. Trubisky is trying to decipher all the information and it’s flooding his mind right now. Young insisted that this should calm down with time. Once it happens, the accuracy issue should not only get better but “significantly” better. Given how productive he’s been so far in Nagy’s offense, there’s no telling how crazy it could get if Young is correct.
