Hall Of Fame QB Has Seen Enough Of Luke Getsy In Chicago

-

Justin Fields gets most of the attention when things go good or bad for the Chicago Bears offense. However, it takes 11 guys for everything to function. The one guiding those 11 guys is offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. Against Denver and Washington the previous week, it felt like he was starting to find an identity for the Bears. It was heavier personnel, a steady commitment to the run, and lots of play action. For whatever reason, all of that went out the window against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. It was another among many cases of Getsy’s players looking unprepared for what an opponent had planned for them.

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner has watched this offense several times since last year. He made it clear to Parkins & Spiegel of 670 The Score that he’s unimpressed with what Getsy tried to do. Not only were the Bears unable to handle the Vikings’ blitzes, but the constant miscommunications up front never seemed to end. He couldn’t believe the number of times a defensive tackle got a free run to the quarterback. That is something that cannot happen in the NFL. Getsy deserves plenty of blame for that.

Luke Getsy is plagued by a lack of common sense.

Everybody knew the Vikings were going to blitz in that game. It’s their new identity. It was also likely they would roll coverages to D.J. Moore in an effort to hold him down after his 230-yard explosion against Washington. Yet, from everything the Bears showed, they weren’t expecting either of those things. Minnesota got free rushers at Justin Fields and Tyson Bagent all day. Multiple defensive backs blanketed Moore, and the Bears never adjusted to get Darnell Mooney or Cole Kmet more involved.

What made it especially painful was the Bears ran the ball well. They had over 160 yards on the ground. For them to be so ineffective through the air despite plenty of play action opportunities is baffling. This doesn’t even account for his ongoing fascination with wide receiver screens and runs on 3rd and 5 or longer. Luke Getsy doesn’t seem to grasp good situational football, and it’s killing the Bears whenever they run into well-coached opponents. Hiring him will be one of the biggest reasons head coach Matt Eberflus likely gets fired after this season.
