Good Thing Those Bears Carson Wentz Rumors Were False

So many things happened over the past few months that Chicago Bears fans can be forgiven for not remembering certain events. When it comes to the quarterback issue? Most only remember the brief flirtation with Deshaun Watson, the painfully near-miss on Russell Wilson, and finally the snagging of Justin Fields in the draft. It happened so fast that it’s easy to overlook that brief period where Carson Wentz was a possibility as well.

Back in March, it became clear that the former Pro Bowler no longer wanted to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. He was tired of not being viewed as the guy and his tense relationship with former head coach Doug Pederson didn’t help. The rise of Jalen Hurts last season which led to his benching was the last straw. Wentz demanded a trade from the Eagles back in the spring. This led to a massive outpouring of rumors over where he might end up.

Inevitably, the Bears became a big part of that.

Not only were they in the hunt for quarterback help, they also had ties to Wentz via quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. It seemed like an easy sell to many. In fact, some even reported that the Bears had the best offer on the table for the 28-year old at one point. Then on March 17th, the quarterback was shipped to the Indianapolis Colts for a 3rd round pick in 2021 and a conditional 2nd round pick in 2022.

Insiders reported afterward that Chicago was never seriously in pursuit of Wentz. A surefire sign that they had misgivings about Wentz. Not just because of his massive contract but other factors as well. One of them being his health. Over the past four seasons, Wentz has battled a number of injuries. Combined with his considerable regression in 2020, the Bears weren’t willing to take the risk.

Based on a new report from Adam Schefter? That already looks like a good call.

Carson Wentz can’t seem to stay on the field

It isn’t yet certain how severe the injury is. Either way, this marks the third significant setback he’s had to deal with. First was the torn ACL that knocked him out of the 2017 season. Then came the back injury that knocked him out after 11 games the next year. In 2019 it was a concussion suffered in the playoffs. Even last season it was evident he wasn’t playing at 100% most of the time.

Now before even getting into pads, the guy is hurt again. Carson Wentz is a talented quarterback but he’s fast becoming untrustworthy. The Colts felt they could take the risk on him because they had one of the best offensive lines in the NFL. That is now in question too after stalwart left tackle Anthony Castonzo chose to retire. They better hope Wentz recovers because their QB prospects without him aren’t ideal.

As for the Bears?

They seem more than happy with what they have. Andy Dalton looks sharp in the early going at training camp. Fields is steadily improving and continues to provide multiple flashes of his talent. If one were to poll fans right now it’s a safe bet they’d express great relief the team didn’t take that dive into the Wentz pool.
