Former Scout Says Chicago Bears Draft Accomplished a Rare Feat

-

Daniel Jeremiah is among the more respected NFL draft analysts in the business. A former scout for teams like Baltimore and Philadelphia, he has become a go-to expert every year on college classes coming into the pros for NFL Network. That’s why his assessment of the Chicago Bears draft for 2019 was interesting.

The way he went about it was the unique part. Rather than do the traditional method of just grading the group, he simplified things. He determined how many players in the top 100 prospects overall each team managed to secure. This gave an idea of how much value they got out of their respective classes.

In the case of the Bears, they managed to secure two. That may not sound like a lot until one adds context.

Chicago Bears draft pulled off feat with fewest and lowest picks

According to Jeremiah, a total of 10 other teams managed to procure two top 100 prospects for their draft classes. What stands out most about it? Two things. All but one of those teams had more picks than the Bears’ five this year, and all of them held at least two picks higher than them as well.

  • Atlanta Falcons – 7
  • Carolina Panthers – 7
  • Dallas Cowboys – 8
  • Jacksonville Jaguars – 7
  • Los Angeles Chargers – 7
  • Los Angeles Rams – 8
  • Miami Dolphins – 6
  • New Orleans Saints – 5
  • New York Jets – 6
  • Pittsburgh Steelers – 9

This list doesn’t include the Cleveland Browns, who held seven picks and managed to secure only one such player. The two names who qualified for Chicago were running back David Montgomery and wide receiver Riley Ridley. Not only were both high on Jeremiah’s board, but they were both right next to each other at #43 and #42 respectively.

It seems almost like destiny that they were going to be teammates. The best part though? Both of them were rated higher than new Green Bay Packers rookie Darnell Savage, who they took in the 1st round. That must be what they call winning the draft.
