The Allen Robinson situation has become fluid. Anybody with common sense can tell the 27-year old wide receiver is trending towards leaving next offseason. He’ll be a free agent and the odds of him wanting to stay with the Chicago Bears are remote. This team needs a ton of work on offense from the offensive line to the quarterback. Why would he want to waste the remaining years of his prime on something like that?

So a lot of fans have taken it upon themselves to tell him to leave, which is utterly pointless. Either way, it’s obvious the Bears are about to lose their best offensive player by a considerable margin. Nobody else has come close to Robinson’s consistent dependability as he approaches a second-straight 1,000-yard season.

At least one person seems to feel it won’t be a big loss.

ESPN had their daily Get Up program and held a segment covering the Bears. Specifically, head coach Matt Nagy’s rant about the team needing to wake up from what was an embarrassing effort in Green Bay. Most people blame him for how uninspired and ill-prepared the team was that night.

Former quarterback Greg McElroy sees it differently. The reason the Bears were steamrolled like that was that the Packers were the better football team. They had more talented players. Chicago’s roster, especially on offense, wasn’t in the same class. And yes, that includes Robinson who he seems to not hold in high regard.

Allen Robinson may be leaving but deserves respect

McElroy has high standards when it comes to wide receivers. He played with Julio Jones in college. Nobody would argue Robinson is on Jones’ level. Still, to say he’d be the 4th-best receiver in Dallas? That is a monumental stretch. He is at the same level of productivity as either Amari Cooper or CeeDee Lamb and he didn’t have Dak Prescott throwing to him for a large chunk of the season.

The guy isn’t explosive but he’s a masterful route runner, plenty quick, strong, and makes the play when his team needs him to. Unfortunately, he’s had a harder time than usual corralling contested balls this year. No doubt a big reason why some people are getting frustrated with him. One can bet that played a part in McElroy’s hot take.

Bottom line? The guy is a damn good football player.

Allen Robinson will be missed when he leaves, however that ends up being. Still, NFL teams can replace wide receivers much easier than other positions. It’s just a fact. The Bears lost Alshon Jeffery in 2017. A year later they signed Robinson and never looked back. Houston traded DeAndre Hopkins and Deshaun Watson is still having the best season of his career.

It’s worth mentioning none of the six highest-paid receivers in the NFL have a Super Bowl ring. This isn’t a position that is considered vital to the success of a football team. As good as Robinson is, the Bears have bigger problems.

Not a bears fan but McElroy loves stirring the pot. He’s dead wrong if he thinks Robinson isn’t good. I think he is more of a star on almost any other team. But in all fairness the Dallas cowboys were a bad example. I truly believe they have 3 guys that could be number 1s on many other teams
