Chicago Bears fans aren’t sure how to feel about Matt Nagy. On the one hand, the Chicago Bears head coach is so likable, a clear leader, and an excellent humanitarian. At the same time, is he a good coach? He went 12-4 his first year, breaking one of the longest playoff droughts in franchise history. Then his team endured a rough disappointment in 2019, falling to 8-8. A big reason for this was the failures of own offense.
So people are split on whether he should be on the hot seat this season. That’s why it was interesting when former All-Pro punter Pat McAfee was asked a question on his show. Who does he think is the head coach that’s on the hottest seat going into this season? To him, the two biggest reside in the NFC North with Nagy holding the candle. Unless he gets back to the playoffs or starts to elevate the QB position, he could be out.
Matt Nagy is ultimately tied at the hip with Ryan Pace
It’s important to remember that Nagy was brought in to do two things. That was win football games and finally fix the quarterback position in Chicago. He seemed to do both in 2018 but then had no answers in 2019. One must remember that he and GM Ryan Pace are considered a package deal by the team brass. George McCaskey and Ted Phillips wanted their contracts to run along the same timeline, don’t forget.
So it stands to reason if the Bears don’t reach the postseason for the fifth time in six seasons, Pace is gone. At that point, keeping Nagy any longer will be viewed as pointless since he’ll have failed in what he was hired to do. McAfee speaks from experience. He saw the demise of a previously successful head coach before with Jim Caldwell in Indianapolis. Nagy doesn’t have near the credibility he did.
