Florida Coach Admits Defensive Scheme Hindered Gervon Dexter

-

One of the most persistent criticisms of the Gervon Dexter pick by the Chicago Bears was what it represented. Head coach Matt Eberflus always talked about prioritizing a defensive tackle that could rush the quarterback. Then they turn around and spend a valuable 2nd round pick on a player most considered a strong run defender and nothing more. Yes, stopping the run was a big issue for the Bears last season. Still, they’d already added veteran Andrew Billings to help fix that problem. Why add another guy in the draft when they could’ve prioritized other positions of need?

The answer wasn’t complicated. GM Ryan Poles stated that Dexter had the physical dimensions necessary to be much more than a simple run defender. He’s big, long, powerful, and a terrific athlete for his size. It was hinted that the organization felt Florida’s defensive scheme never looked to take full advantage of his pass rush potential. Co-defensive coordinator Sean Spencer spoke about this on the Under Center podcast and basically admitted there was truth to the statements.

The Bears have already begun changing how Gervon Dexter plays.

They’ve elongated his stride and adjusted his mechanics to help maximize his ability to get up the field. Results have already been noticed. The rookie had multiple moments of creating instant pressure on the pocket thanks to his quickness and closing speed. Yet what stands out the most to onlookers is his motor. For all the rumors about him having a lazy side, Dexter is quickly earning a reputation for hustling to the football on every snap. It’s part of why Bears offensive linemen are having a hard time dealing with him.

While it is way too early to predict what Gervon Dexter will become, it’s obvious the team is justified in their thinking. There are many reasons that can go into why a player wasn’t more productive in college. One that rarely gets enough air time is the scheme they played in. It’s hard to generate sacks when you’re not being asked to attack the pocket. Dexter deserves credit for being a good soldier and doing what he was told. Now he might finally be in a situation that will fully utilize his talents.
