The First Hint of The Elusive Mitch Trubisky Debut Finally Drops

-

After watching the Chicago Bears win Sunday over Pittsburgh, there was a bittersweet taste in a lot of peoples’ mouths. While fans of course were thrilled their team got the victory, they knew it also would inevitably come with a side effect. The coaching staff would use it to justify keeping Mike Glennon as the starter. Thus the anticipated Mitch Trubisky debut is delayed even further.

This despite the fact that Glennon once again looked like, well, a backup masquerading as a starter. He managed just 101 yards passing on the day with a touchdown and an interception. The Bears essentially won the game without their QB being a notable part of it. His TD toss was from the two-yard line set up by play action. Adam Shaheen was wide open.

People continue to wonder what service Glennon provides the offense besides experience. Given his production it’s difficult to see how Trubisky could do much worse. Yet the rookie continues to stay on the bench. Suddenly people are wondering when his time will finally come. It seems there may be a light at the end of the tunnel though.

Mitch Trubisky debut may come at unexpected time and place

By now there are theories as to when the best time might be for Chicago to take the bubble wrap off the kid. Many see week five against the Minnesota Vikings at home as the likely place. It’s after the Bears’ Thursday Night game in Green Bay, meaning they’d have 10 days to prepare Trubisky for the contest. Others see the bye in week nine as the most logical spot, allowing for two full weeks of preparation.

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Trubine has a different date in mind. According to people monitoring the situation closely, they suggested another game that might be perfect for the rookie to get his feet wet.

“So, Trubisky would have just a little extra action in practice if the Bears were to hand things over to him in Week 5 against Minnesota. Two folks I have spoken to that are closely monitoring the situation and have a vested interest in seeing Trubisky play well suggested a better date could be in Week 8 when the Bears play at the Saints on Oct. 29, the week before the bye. Their reasoning is that the Saints’ defense is atrocious and while the Superdome can be a rowdy place to play, it eliminates the added pressure a rookie would feel making a debut at home.”

The Saints defense is always in a giving mood

It’s a fascinating suggestion. This year the Saints defense ranks 30th in the league against the pass (311 yards per game) and 24th against the run (126 yards per game). Sam Bradford had 346 yards on them before Tom Brady dropped 447. This has been a recurring problem for them dating back years. The last time they played a rookie quarterback was 2016 when Jared Goff threw three touchdowns against them.

It was only his second start to that point. He would end up with five TD passes total in seven games. They gave up 60% of them in one. That’s a fitting explanation of just how bad this group is. Of course they might be a bit better than last year, but aren’t showing it much so far. Trubisky could get off to a strong start against them, then have two full weeks to prepare for his Soldier Field debut against Green Bay.
