Most of the attention this month involving the Chicago Bears will be their offense. Hardly a surprise given it will feature a quarterback competition. More than anything though it’s because there won’t be many surprises on defense. People can pretty much guess how the starting lineup will shake out there because it is loaded with Pro Bowl talent across the board.
However, there were a couple of spots open for business. Perhaps the most prominent being the #2 cornerback spot across from Kyle Fuller. Recently vacated by Prince Amukamara. Fans and media seem to think that the spot is likely to end up in the hands of rookie 2nd round pick Jaylon Johnson. His talent and tape reflect that confidence.
Then again, it seems people forgot to inform the Bears coaches about that. When the pads went on for the first time on Monday, it wasn’t Johnson running with the first-team defense. That responsibility fell to new free agent addition Artie Burns. The former 1st round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Chicago Bears aren’t handing anything to anybody
If nothing else, this development is a reminder to people. This Bears coaching staff isn’t in the business of table reservations. They don’t care how much money you signed for or how early you were drafted. If you want to play on Sundays, then step up and earn it. That is what Johnson will have to do. Burns got the early look for his experience but rest assured both Johnson and Toliver will get their opportunities.

Burns came into the NFL with a ton of potential. He has the size, athleticism, and speed to be a top cornerback. Many feel he just came into the league too raw. He wasn’t ready and it showed in Pittsburgh. No doubt the Bears felt he could do with a fresh start in Chicago working under a defensive back specialist in Chuck Pagano.
Something to watch as the weeks continue.
