The Chicago Bears have long had a strong presence at running back. It is probably the most decorated position in franchise history outside of linebacker. Unfortunately, it appears the team is in a transition phase. After a strong run that saw them go from Matt Forte to Jordan Howard to David Montgomery in quick succession, they have been able to lock down their next workhorse. They’d hoped D’Andre Swift could be that guy, but his skill set doesn’t fit that job. The draft didn’t yield much help either. Their only addition was 7th round pick Kyle Monangai.
That is what led to the initial buzz that the Bears could opt to sign former Pro Bowler Nick Chubb. While he isn’t the player he was a few years ago due to injury setbacks, it is reasonable to believe he has some gas left in the tank to at least be in a committee backfield alongside Swift. However, the rumors have gone up and down for weeks. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler indicated that the Bears remain a definite possibility. If something happens, fans should expect it around the start of training camp in July.
“I know he expects to play, wants to play. The running back market is tough. A lot of these guys are waiting. I think they’re going to wait probably until training camp at this point. It doesn’t help them to sign in late May or early June…
…There are some teams out there that could be in the market for one,” Fowler said. “The Commanders or the Bears come to mind. Just in general terms, they could be looking for an extra back at some point, could need some help.”
Nick Chubb isn’t in too much danger of being plucked.
The running back market is significantly depressed right now, thanks to the deep draft class. He and other veterans must wait for teams to assess where their rosters are during OTAs and minicamps. The Bears will then use the off time between June and July to decide if they need another body. Word has persisted that head coach Ben Johnson likes Roschon Johnson and may look to carve out a bigger role for him moving forward. If Monangai also makes a good impression, the Bears may feel they don’t have to sign Nick Chubb. Going with the younger guys is always the smarter play at that position. Johnson’s offense is geared to run the ball and run it well. Finding good running backs isn’t hard when you have a sound system.
