Cordarrelle Patterson Welcomes Nick Foles With the Perfect Joke

-

It took longer than normal given the COVID-19 issues, but the Nick Foles trade to the Chicago Bears finally became official on Tuesday. The 30-year old will be the backup, replacing Chase Daniel but reportedly will enter an open competition with Mitch Trubisky for the starting job. Foles sent a quick message to Bears fans expressing what an honor it was to join the organization. The honor for publicly contact him first though went to wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson.

The All-Pro special teamer has made it his mission to be the ambassador for the Bears during their 2020 free agency period. He’s actively recruited a number of players to the organization in hopes of making the roster better. It seems he hasn’t let that responsibility slip away as the market slowed down. Not long after the Foles news became official, Patterson welcomed him to the team and then delivered a light-hearted joke.

Will Nick Foles unretire the #9 in Chicago?

Actually the subject of jersey number is an interesting topic. Foles stated when he left Philadelphia for Jacksonville last year that he was not planning to bring the #9 with him. He felt that number belonged to the city. Besides, he’d warn different numbers elsewhere including #5 in St. Louis, #4 in Kansas City, and most recently #7 with the Jaguars. Still, there is no question that #9 has brought him the most success in the NFL. Might he consider un-retiring it to wear in Chicago?

If so, he’ll have to go through the recently re-signed Tyler Bray for it.

Presuming he sticks by his original stance, which number might he go with? One possibility is his old digit he wore in college at Arizona, the #8. While that would make sense, it would also be quite dangerous. Quarterbacks who have worn #8 for the Bears tend to have ugly stays with the team. Among them include Cade McNown, Rex Grossman, Jimmy Clausen, and Mike Glennon. Not exactly a number with a favorable history.
