The Chicago Bears have had some of the worst luck this season with referees and incredibly bad calls. Or no-calls in some cases. One week it’s a player getting called for a block in the back while a teammate had his facemask almost ripped off. Then another where the quarterback is almost decapitated. Yet the worst of the bunch somehow saved itself for the Green Bay Packers game on a fateful play in the 1st quarter by Cordarrelle Patterson.
Most fans by now either saw the play live or have seen the replays. Here’s a quick recap. The Bears were forced to punt after their first series. Patterson made a terrific break on the play and was the first man to arrive as the Packers returner was fielding it. The receiver hit him right as the ball arrived, knocking it loose for what looked like a fumble that the Bears recovered. The refs quickly called a penalty, stating that Patterson arrived too early. Thus kick-catch interference.
Replays quickly showed they were completely off on that assessment. Patterson had arrived well after the ball contacted the returner. It was a perfectly clean play. Instead the Packers got the ball, a 15-yard penalty, and quickly went on to score a touchdown. That set the tone for the entire game.
Cordarrelle Patterson thinks the refs need a gift
At this point, Patterson and the Bears have no idea what they did to constantly get such garbage refereeing each week. Constantly screaming at them hasn’t helped much. So the receiver decided to take some advice from a friend. Maybe they should think about doing the opposite.

‘‘I don’t know what I did to the refs this week. Somebody told me I need to start bringing them donuts and stuff before the game. Next week, I’m going to have to bring some hot chocolate and all that stuff.’’
Honestly, this isn’t the worst idea because whatever the Bears have tried to this point hasn’t worked. If offering a few sweets to the zebras might get them an extra call or two during a game, that could make a huge difference on Sundays. They certainly don’t have anything to lose in trying.
