The Chicago Bears knew during the pre-draft process that Colston Loveland was somebody they couldn’t get enough of. His tape at Michigan was excellent and he nailed the interview process. Head coach Ben Johnson recognized what he could be in the new offense, giving Caleb Williams another viable target. The Bears head coach knows tight ends. He coached the position in Detroit and Miami. However, he wasn’t alone in loving Loveland. GM Ryan Poles and his front office were big fans.
Co-director of player personnel Jeff King spoke to the media about the pick. He revealed the Bears saw visions of a former star tight end who went to multiple Pro Bowls.
Todd Heap was a great player for the Baltimore Ravens in the 2000s. At his peak, he was averaging 700-800 yards per season in an offense geared around the run and boasting quarterbacks like Jeff Blake and Kyle Boller. Injuries shortened his career, but he was a nightmare for defenses to deal with.

The way the draft fell, makes this easier to swallow but he’d better average more than 800 yards a season as the 10th pick. After Banks was gone, wish they could’ve traded down but oh well. Looking more forward to the two 2nd round picks
Good pick. We were all hyped up about bigger names, trades etc and when it unfolded differently there was a letdown. Could turn out to be a great pick. We’ll know soon enough. Now trade up and get Green.
@bigbear75 – as I said earlier – it depends on whether Johnson actually gets good production out of him. If so, it’s OK. But if not, and other guys taken after him do better, then it’s not. Production trumps everything in trying to win. And for me, that’s all that matters.
I couldn’t care less who “likes” him at Halas Hall. Can they use him correctly to win?
The way the board fell, especially when NO took Banks at 9, I wasn’t surprised they went TE at 1:10. I was surprised by the TE they selected. Don’t get me wrong, I think Loveland is a terrific player, but WOW!
