The Chicago Bears aren’t seen as one of the teams who will be aggressive at the upcoming trade deadline on October 29th. Part of that is due to their lack of assets to trade with and the other is there doesn’t seem like a quick fix for their current problems out there anywhere. Not unless they can somehow pry a starting quarterback from another team which is unlikely. This hasn’t stopped people from pondering moves they could make.
Marc Sessler of NFL.com believes there might be help out there for them. Somebody who can give their struggling offense a nice jolt. None other than Kenyan Drake. The Miami Dolphins, who remain winless, are in firesale mode and have already sold off several players including Laremy Tunsil and Kenny Stills. Most believe that Drake will have his turn shortly. The 25-year old is viewed as one of the more versatile running backs in the league, able to pop big plays on the ground and through the air.
Sessler thinks he would solve the Bears’ running game woes.
“Buy running back Kenyan Drake. Seven carries a game ain’t gonna cut it. Paced by David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen, the Bears’ 28th-ranked running game needs a reinvention. Enter Drake, whom Miami has been dangling as trade bait for a while now. Over the last two weeks, Mark Walton has earned more touches than the former third-rounder. A move to the Windy City won’t take a Miami miracle. Potential compensation: 2020 seventh-round pick and 2021 third-round pick.”
Kenyan Drake won’t solve the Chicago Bears running game
Sessler is not wrong in that Drake is a talented offensive player who was wasted for far too long in Miami. At the same time, his addition would not solve the Bears’ overall issues with the ground game. They already have enough talent in the backfield with David Montgomery and Tarik Cohen. Their problems lay with two underlying issues. The subpar blocking of the offensive line and the inability of the head coach Matt Nagy to make a steady commitment to running the ball.

Odds are adding Drake to the mix would only result in him getting stuck in a log jam with those other two for the limited touches already going around. This is more about a philosophy shift. The Bears need to make a greater effort to balancing the offense and truly approach each game with the mindset that they’re going to run the football and dare other teams to stop them. Besides, they’ve already given up too many valuable future draft picks in previous trades. They need to keep the few they still have.
