The Chicago Bears were busy this week looking at possible new additions to their roster. Among them were three quarterbacks and three wide receivers. This was interesting. It’s known that Andy Dalton suffered a knee injury against Cincinnati. Justin Fields then exited that ugly Cleveland game with a banged-up throwing hand. Though X-rays were negative, it appears the team might be looking at possible emergency options if the rookie ends up getting hurt worse.

As for the receiver situation? That is unclear. Perhaps somebody suffered an injury that hasn’t been reported yet. The first injury report comes out Wednesday. Details will likely be coming by that point. Most of the names involved aren’t what one might call notable, but there was at least one who local college football fans would recognize.

Peyton Ramsey was the starting quarterback for almost three years at Indiana.

Then he transferred in 2020 to Northwestern. There he helped guide the Wildcats to a final ranking of 10th in country. Their highest finish since 1995. Ramsey wasn’t always great but he came up big in some key games. He threw two touchdowns in a tight win over Wisconsin and then almost had 300 yards with three touchdowns in the Citrus Bowl victory over Auburn. While not a standout talent, he is known for being smart and efficient.

As for the others?

Jacob Dolegala is a large quarterback at 6’7. He had a somewhat uneven career at Central Connecticut State but showcased the size and arm strength teams tend to like in the NFL. So he got opportunities as an undrafted free agent. Ryan Willis looked like he was poised to get drafted high after his 2018 season at Virginia Tech. One where he accounted for 2700 yards passing, 350 rushing, and 28 total touchdowns. Sadly injuries derailed his senior year and he went undrafted.

The Chicago Bears don’t have a quarterback on their practice squad. That could be about to change given the health situation on the main roster. None of these guys would be considered the premium choice for emergency backup but it seems the options are limited. It will be interesting to see which of them, if any, get signed.
