Chicago Bears: Top 5 Replacements For Ted Phillips As Team President

Ted Phillips is 68-years old. He’s been team president of the Chicago Bears for 21 years. During that time it never felt like he was truly in danger of losing his job. How could he? The man helped turn the McCaskey family into billionaires. He was untouchable? Well, it appears that aura of invincibility might finally be wearing off.

As the team sinks toward what appears to be another rebuild so soon after finishing the last one that started in 2015, it sounds like Phillips is in seriously hot water for the first time. George McCaskey is furious and considering a massive organizational shakeup. That includes the possibility of re-assigning Phillips and finding a new team president.

If that ends up being the case, who could the Bears possibly look to as replacements. Here are a few names they should consider.

Chicago Bears options if they want a new team president

#1 – Trace Armstrong (Agent)

Older Bears fans will recognize the name right away. Armstrong was a 1st round pick by Chicago in 1989. He became a fixture on their defense until 1994, developing into one of their best pass rushers. Unfortunately, he was traded in 1995 to Miami and would go on to have a long, productive career that spanned over 200 games with 106 career sacks. During that time he was also made President of the NFL Players Association.

After retiring in the early 2000s, he transitioned to the business side of football. Armstrong became an agent representing coaches at both the college and pro levels. He’s seen both sides of the game on and off the field. Remember the McCaskey family will want somebody with financial savvy since this franchise is essentially their lone moneymaker. He represents the ideal compromise.

#2 – Omar Khan (Pittsburgh Steelers VP of Football & Business Administration)

Khan is considered somewhat of a secret weapon in Pittsburgh. A right-hand man to GM Kevin Colbert who has routinely built one of the most consistently good rosters in the NFL. Khan joined the organization in 2001 and rose the ranks to become VP of Football and Business Administration. Basically, he is their contract and salary cap specialist. Many polled agents believe it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a general manager.

Having worked in a place like Pittsburgh, considered by many to be the gold standard of organizations in the league, he’d know exactly what ails the Bears upon closer evaluation. What makes him an even more interesting candidate? He actually has connections to the organization. College Scouting Director Mark Sadowski, one of the most respected guys at Halas Hall is friends with Khan. They go way back to their days at Tulane University together.

#3 – Cliff Stein (Chicago Bears Senior Vice President/General Counsel)

If the Bears are looking to promote from within, then Stein needs to be the choice. It remains confusing to this day why the organization removed him as director of football administration and general counsel. Why? Namely, because he was considered one of the best in the NFL. His ability to manage the salary cap and negotiate player contracts was unrivaled and a big reason why the organization had some of its best success in the 2000s.

Sadly when Ryan Pace arrived, he wanted his own guy Joseph Laine in that role. Since then Stein has been somewhat relegated to the background. What makes him qualified? Prior to joining the Bears front office, he was a player agent from 1994 to 2001. So he’s worked both sides of the fence in that regard. Stein has a ton of connections around the NFL and is universally respected.

#4 – Howie Roseman (Eagles general manager)

Word out of Philadelphia is ownership might be considering a major shakeup to their organization. No doubt a byproduct of the team’s recent downturn in fortunes this season. Belief is GM Howie Roseman, in that position since all the way back in 2010, could be on the chopping block. It’s hard to believe considering the man built that 2017 Super Bowl championship team but this is the nature of the NFL sometimes.

What is crazy is Roseman is only 45-years old. Still quite young for a man with so much front office experience. He has a deep background in law and business. He worked on the financial side of the Eagles organization in the 2000s before transitioning to personnel in 2008. That gives him the ideal perspective of balance between business and football. His vision on how to build a team is well-established.

#5 – Amy Trask (Analyst)

Trask is one of the most universally respected names in the business of football. She is currently an analyst for CBS but before that, she spent 16 years as the CEO of the Oakland Raiders from 1997 to 2013. So she has extensive experience on how to run a football organization. What she never had though was true autonomy since late owner Al Davis was always the one who really called the shots. So people have been anxious to see what Trask could do with true power.

Her intelligence and knowledge of the deep inner workings of the NFL are invaluable. She’s extremely well-connected around the league and is respected by all. She’s known for being strong-willed, passionate, thoughtful, and eloquent. All traits ownership like the Chicago Bears would covet. Just imagine the kind of impression she’d want to make if she became the first female team president in league history.
