The Chicago Bears didn’t get Ashton Jeanty in the end. While unfortunate, that didn’t deter them from going after more weaponry for Caleb Williams. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson pulled a slight surprise, opting for Michigan tight end Colston Loveland. Many view him as the most explosive player at his position in the draft. He’s big, athletic, and a natural pass catcher. He offers upside that Cole Kmet can’t. If the Bears wanted to open up the passing game, this was a great way to do it.
Many see Loveland as the best tight end in the draft. He’s drawing comparisons to Sam LaPorta, whom Johnson coached to the Pro Bowl in Detroit. Guarding one good tight end is hard enough. Imagine what happens now that the Bears potentially have two. That is without mentioning D.J. Moore and Rome Odunze at wide receiver. Williams is in a great spot. There is no shortage of options at his disposal, which is something many quarterbacks in this city could never say.
The Chicago Bears have opened things up in so many ways.
One area of the field where they struggled attacking last season was over the middle. Part of that was because the coaching staff didn’t feature Kmet more. This move suggests the Chicago Bears coaches aim to change that in a big way. Loveland is a matchup nightmare who can line up anywhere on the field. Linebackers and safeties can’t cover him. If you devote a cornerback to him, it immediately opens up opportunities for the wide receivers. That is why guys like Travis Kelce, George Kittle, and Brock Bowers are so coveted. It might not be the splash move many fans wanted, but this guy can play. Bears fans should end up being quite happy once they see him develop.
