Chicago Bears Reportedly Have A Chance To Boost Pass Rush

-

The Chicago Bears managed to save their season for at least another week when they thumped the Dallas Cowboys 31-14. Now they head into Las Vegas hoping to build some momentum. If they can take down the Raiders, they will reach the bye week at 2-2, having stabilized things enough to catch their breath. That is where GM Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson have some decisions to make. It is evident that the roster isn’t perfect. There are weak areas that cause problems for the team. One of the most pressing is the pass rush. Montez Sweat has been uneven, as has Dayo Odeyingbo. Grady Jarrett looks invisible.

Austin Booker is still on IR, and there is no guarantee he can change the equation when he eventually returns. The Bears need somebody who can have a genuine impact. With free agency barren this time of year, their only hope is the trade market. However, teams aren’t generally prone to trading pass rushers, even if the season isn’t going well. However, insider Matt Lombardo of Between The Hashmarks hears there is a strong possibility the New York Giants may entertain trading Kayvon Thibodeaux.

The Giants picked up Thibodeaux’s fifth-year option earlier this spring, but this might be the best opportunity to trade him, if they believe he’s more of a luxury at a loaded position than an asset on a roster that is thin on them virtually everywhere else.

They absolutely should trade him,” a rival NFC personnel executive tells Between The Hashmarks, of Thibodeaux, on the condition of anonymity to speak freely about another team. “They need help everywhere.”

Thibodeaux would be a worthwhile risk for the Chicago Bears.

The former 1st round pick had 11.5 sacks in 2023. Last year, he only managed 5.5, but still had 17 QB hits. He has the size, length, power, and explosiveness teams look for in an edge rusher. New York already paid Brian Burns and now has Abdul Carter. They can’t really afford to pay Thibodeaux, too. Trading him makes financial sense, particularly if their season continues down the path it has at 0-3.

Conversely, the Chicago Bears have an opening for another rusher. Thibodeaux would offer a dimension they don’t really have, and he’s only 24 years old. The big issue would be money. If they trade for him, it would require some kind of contract extension unless they plan to let him walk in free agency. They’ve already sunk a lot of money into Sweat and Odeyingbo, so that would require some creativity. Such a trade would make the Bears better. The only real hurdle is a fiscal one.

One of the biggest problems that Bears fans, and national writers have, is a lack of vision. They NEVER look fully at what they have, before spending money on broken down, Salvation Army items, that have a brand name on it. Why would the Giants trade Thibodeaux? They want to free cap space for the future. The Bears, of course, are in a FAR better position, having won one more game than the Giants, and having trounced the team that BEAT the Giants, without giving up 30 points with that defense. And just think, Chicago had an opportunity to hire… Read more »

@Skeeter Here’s the thing…you’re right about all the facts you laid out, but the current team your pissed off about has been together for three games, not 4 years, not 10 years, and not since the mid-70’s when I became a fan. Nearly 50% of their roster is new to Chicago this year, coming from teams and systems all over the NFL and NCAA. Then you have nearly 100% new coaches with only two holdovers, and only 2 or 3 have ever even been on the same staff. Throw in being without 3 of your 4 best corners, your best… Read more »

To argue about giving Dennis Allen more time to figure it out is fair, but to turn a blind eye on verifiable evidence that the defense statistically is ranked 29th in the league in Pressure rate is beyond putting your head in the sand. What the fuck is wrong with some of these fans, the go along to get along approach is not my forte. When your team is 16 – 38 for 4 long years and ranked 29th in defensive pressure rates I’m in no fucking mood to go along to get along, Fuck anyone who has this mentality,… Read more »

I’ve made $84,000 so far this month working online and I’m a full time student. I’m using an online business opportunity I heard about and I’ve made such great money. It’s really user friendly and I’m just so happy that I found out about it. The potential with this is endless.

Personally, I think the constant bitching got old a long time ago. The only thing that changes is who people want fired, cut or traded each week. Doing crap, in this case, trading for the third best edge rusher from one of the worst teams in football, solves exactly nothing, except pisses away money and picks. Or, maybe, just maybe, it makes more sense to give Allen more than three games to figure it all out considering that the defense has actually played 7 good quarters and 5 bad while missing a bunch of key guys and learning their new… Read more »
