Chicago Bears Practice Squad Mostly Filled And Includes A New Face

The Chicago Bears practice squad is going to be considerably different than in years past. Namely because it’s far bigger than ever before. Due to the concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic, teams have been permitted by the NFL to have 16 total players on a squad at one time. This includes a number of veterans with unlimited levels of experience.

After making the final cuts on Saturday, the team moved swiftly to fill out all 16 spots. There were few surprises. Familiar names like Jesper Horsted, Artavis Pierce, 7th round pick Lachavious Simmons, and Tyler Bray were all present. Recent un-retired receiver Rodney Adams also found his way into the mix. The same for promising undrafted linebacker Rashad Smith.

There was one noteworthy name present that wasn’t part of the Bears’ training camp. That being veteran offensive lineman Jamon Brown. He has started for various teams over the past few years including the Rams and Falcons. While a bit undersized, he’s athletic and seems to have a good degree of run blocking prowess.

Not a bad option to have in case of emergencies.

Chicago Bears practice squad seems focused on the trenches

This isn’t a huge surprise. The best teams must always keep themselves strong in terms of depth up front. Of the 16 players on the squad, six play offensive or defensive line. They also have an additional three wide receivers. One name that is certain to garner some attention in the coming weeks is Artavis Pierce. He seemed to have a strong camp and the coaches reportedly like him.

Could he become a part of their rotation after the season begins? He certainly has the type of versatility they seem to covet. Maybe they just don’t feel he’s as polished or up to speed as they need him to be.
