Chicago Bears Hunt For Pass Rushers Isn’t Over Yet

-

Signing Robert Quinn to replace Leonard Floyd was a clear message from the Chicago Bears. They were not satisfied with the state of their pass rush last season. Given how little Floyd was able to accomplish (three sacks in 16 games) that’s not difficult to understand. So this probably means the team is well satisfied with their new lineup right? Not exactly.

Rumors have continued to circulate of the team meeting with multiple pass rush options in the upcoming NFL draft. No doubt while they love their starters, it’s not hard to guess why they’re doing this. The state of their depth is a major question mark. Right now Isaiah Irving and Barkevious Mingo are their two backups at outside linebacker. Neither is known for being able to consistently put pressure on the quarterback.

Adding a draft pick to that mix would make sense under those circumstances. That is why they’ve kept in contact with multiple possibilities including Alabama’s Terrell Lewis according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle.

Chicago Bears will see Lewis as a project to mold

Lewis is an intriguing physical specimen. He has athleticism, length, power, and the quickness required to be a true quarterback hunter. It’s just difficult to tell how far along he is. His progress was severely hampered by multiple injury setbacks for the Crimson Tide. Not until 2019 did he finally stay mostly healthy, collecting six sacks in 10 games.

Joe Marino of The Draft Network sees him as an ideal fit for a 3-4 defense with big upside if his coaches are patient.

“Projecting best as a 3-4 outside linebacker, Lewis’ length, frame, burst and flexibility can take advantage of runways to set him up for success. He has the mobility needed for zone drops and his length is capable of impacting throwing lanes…There’s an appealing foundation of traits to work with present in Lewis, but he’s underdeveloped and his injury history is considerable.”

If the Bears were looking for a starter, then this is not the guy they need. However, if they’re seeking a potential mid-round flier who can be brought along as a rotational backup? Then Lewis makes a lot of sense. The talent is there. He has to prove he can stay healthy and properly hone his craft.
