Chicago Bears Find Their New Starting Center For Dirt Cheap

-

Luke Getsy coming down from Green Bay as the new offensive coordinator always made it possible he’d bring somebody with him. Sure enough, right before the start of free agency, the Chicago Bears came to terms with veteran interior offensive lineman Lucas Patrick. He spent most of last season starting at center for the Packers, but he also has logged time at both guard spots as well. His versatility brings lots of value.

Patrick allowed just 21 pressures on the quarterback last season in over 600 pass-blocking snaps. He’s 28-years old and brings plenty of big-game experience with him. He understands the necessity of protecting a franchise quarterback. His familiarity with Getsy should make his transition to Chicago easy. Best of all, his tape shows a player that GM Ryan Poles covets. Athletic, quick, physical, and nasty.

He’ll help set the tone up front.

The best part is the price tag. Signing Patrick for just $4 million per year is a bargain. He’s started 34 games at three different positions and played in two NFC championship games. He allowed just one pressure or fewer in 10 of the games he played last season. Rather impressive considering he wasn’t supposed to be the starting center. That job belonged to Josh Myers. That speaks to Patrick’s preparation and skills.

Though Sam Mustipher was retained on a restricted free agent contract, it feels more likely that Patrick would be the Chicago Bears’ choice to start at center. Finding guards is far easier than somebody that can play in the middle. Not to mention Poles still has work to do at tackle as well. Having somebody experienced and affordable in the middle is a good thing. If they can surround him with capable bodies, then the offense may have something going. It will be fascinating to see what moves are still to come.
