Chicago Bears fans have it rough. While the New York Jets have the common courtesy of sucking right from the start, this team made everybody believe it might be good after a 5-1 start. Only now are they being exposed as frauds. Once again they have a great defense capable of playing with anybody. The problem, as always, is their offense probably wouldn’t cut it in the SEC. Let alone the NFC.

Every time it looks like Matt Nagy’s baby has hit rock bottom? They seem to dig down to a completely new level. Facing one of the worst defenses in the NFL on Sunday, the Bears managed just three points in their first three quarters before two garbage-time touchdowns sprayed a little Febreeze on the heap of garbage they put out on that field.

It was an absolute joke.

Only the Bears can win the total yards and time of possession advantage and still find a way to trail by double digits before the final minutes of a game. It seems like the greatest fear fans had dating back to last season is coming true. This organization is once again going to waste a championship-caliber defense on a pitiful excuse for an offense.

Just how bad was the experience for fans? Grant Ramey of 247 Sports was at the game. Right after the second quarter ended, he made an observation that is equal parts hilarious, terrifying, and totally understandable. If anything sums up Bears fandom right now? It’s this singular tweet.

Chicago Bears fans have watched this movie too many times

In a COVID-19 world, something like that shouldn’t be funny. Yet it is because it provides a context for just how miserable this team can make its fans. That they’d willingly expose themselves to a dangerous virus rather than watch it play more offense. Then again maybe part of this misery comes from having seen this exact scenario play out so many times.

Don’t believe it? Here’s a stat for you. In the past decade dating back to 2010, the Bears have paired a top 10 defense with a bottom five offense five times. That isn’t a typo. Five times in just one 10-year span this team watched a great defense get wasted because the offense couldn’t even be bothered to play average football.

Just incredible.

So yeah, the reaction of Chicago Bears fans is easy to understand. They’ve lived with bad offensive football for decades, having to watch almost every other team find their franchise quarterback. When will it be their turn? Either way, it doesn’t feel like GM Ryan Pace will be around much longer to provide an answer. Both he and Matt Nagy have to feel their seats warming up rapidly.

The Bears are 5-4 and about to face a hot Minnesota Vikings team next with the Packers looming out of the bye week. It’s hard not to see them being 5-6 by Thanksgiving. Not unless this offense comes back from the dead. Hopefully, fans won’t take such drastic measures to end their misery.
