The Chicago Bears knew the quarterback room needed some adjustments before next season. While Tyson Bagent was a backup the team liked, there was one problem. He wasn’t much help to Caleb Williams as a sounding board due to his own lack of experience. It was always felt that the team made a mistake not adding some kind of veteran to the mix. Somebody who could give Williams tips about how to study film and play the position as a professional. The new coaching staff quickly corrected that issue, bringing in longtime backup and part-time starter Case Keenum.
There was no question the 37-year-old would be an outstanding addition to the locker room. Not only did he have years of experience helping young quarterbacks improve, but he was also an accomplished player on the field, having taken Minnesota to an NFC championship in 2017. There was one problem. According to Keenum, he planned to retire. Injuries last year and his advancing age compelled him to consider hanging up the cleats. However, he decided to take a meeting with Bears head coach Ben Johnson.
Everything changed after that.
Case Keenum has demonstrated a good sense for these things.
Since becoming a full-time backup later in his career, he has signed with the Cleveland Browns, Buffalo Bills, and Houston Texans. All three of those teams were run by head coaches who ended up making the playoffs. If he’s saying there is something special building with this team, it is wise to take him at his word, as Case Keenum knows the difference between good and bad situations. Word is he’s already proving to be a priceless asset to Williams, who’s using him as a sort of additional coach. If the Bears quarterback embraces the information he’s given, then a big year is coming. Johnson knew exactly what he was doing when he targeted Keenum. These types of guys are essential for a locker room.

Gator Joe,
Absolutely not. Best to listen to what T Gena and Dr Sillie. tell you
@Wade I totally forgot about that useful skill. Another plus for Case!
Plus, he’s pretty handy if you need your trailer backed up in the driveway.
“Case Keenum made a stunning admission . . . . ” I was waiting for him to admit he was Jack the Ripper, and then he admits he was thinking of retiring. Wow!
Late 30s, back-up, injuries, thinking of retiring. Who woulda thought?
I’ll admit. I was stunned. And who woulda thought that a guy who had been to playoffs would know what a playoff team looked like? (The Chicago Bears thought that Matt Eberflus, and Shane Waldron knew).
Ben bringing in someone like Keenum makes so much sense and shows that Ben understands what is needed inside the locker room. I know Fields was a joke and didn’t take anything from Dalton or Foles, but I think Williams is smart enought to learn from a real pro. Keenum is comfortable knowing he is a mentor and emergency QB, while Pace brought in guys that thought they should be starting, which was the mistake. It’s nice having a real coaching staff versus guys that never belonged as HC or coordinators!
