The Chicago Bears seem to have their quarterback situation figured out. Justin Fields remains the starter. GM Ryan Poles has already begun stacking the offense around him with more help. P.J. Walker replaces Trevor Siemian as the backup. The addition makes sense. Walker is a downsized version of Fields. He has the mobility needed to function in this offense and has starting experience. However, somebody thinks the Bears can do much better than the former XFL star. That is Cam Newton.
The former league MVP finds himself without a team for the first time in his career. His steady decline over the past few years was impossible to ignore. While still a significant threat on the ground, his ability to throw the ball has vanished. His trademark velocity is gone and the accuracy suffered as well. Even so, the 33-year-old has maintained the steadfast belief there aren’t 32 quarterbacks in the NFL better than him. That said, he stated on his YouTube channel that he is open to being a backup. He even had a list of QBs he’d be willing to join. Number three on that list? Yep, Justin Fields.
Cam Newton has done his homework.
His goal is to not only get hired but go to a team that offers a good scheme fit for him. With his ability as a passer diminished, he needs to land on a team that runs the football and can take advantage of his mobility. Having watched Fields rush for over 1100 yards last season, it’s only obvious Chicago would be high on his list of teams. Despite the apparent decline, he still had five rushing touchdowns last season. He could be decent if the Bears were to keep the passing demands limited and lean on their ground attack.
Alas, don’t expect it to happen. Walker is younger and likely cheaper than Cam Newton would be. He’s also got a far better arm at this stage of his career. He can attack down the field. Newton can no longer do anything close to that. It’s sad. Everybody knew the numerous hits he took throughout his career in Carolina would take their toll. They finally did. Most quarterbacks can have a productive career well into their late 30s these days. Newton might be out of football this year and isn’t even 34 yet.
