Caleb Williams Gets Even More Protection With Hulking Offensive Tackle

-

The Chicago Bears hinted for months that they intended to grab some competition at left tackle at some point this offseason. They were true to their word. Continuing an offensive surge in the draft, they collected mammoth Boston College left tackle Ozzy Trapilo with the 56th overall pick. The thing that comes to mind immediately is his pass protection. It improved substantially last season thanks to his polished fundamentals and good athleticism. This falls in line with the type of player Dan Roushar likes to get.

He prefers athletic linemen who are established pass protectors, believing that it is much easier to teach run-blocking than vice versa. There is no question that Trapilo has the physical capability to be a quality starting tackle in the NFL. Prominent offensive line expert Brandon Thorn compared him to Rob Havenstein, the ever-reliable right tackle for the Los Angeles Rams. If Trapilo follows the same trajectory, the Bears just got themselves a really good football player.

Caleb Williams should be safeguarded now and in the future.

Trapilo won’t play this season. The Bears clearly drafted him with depth and development in mind. They will move forward with Braxton Jones as the starter in 2025. Then in 2026, it feels more likely than ever they plan to let him hit free agency with Trapilo and Kiran Amegadjie likely to battle for the vacant left tackle spot from there. That isn’t a bad plan since both players have more than enough talent to start in the league. It comes down to who develops faster. Either way, Caleb Williams is the main beneficiary. This is easily the most talented offense the organization has put together in many years. If Trapilo reaches his full potential, this will be seen as a great pickup. Roushar deserves trust here.

Not thrilled with the Trapilo pick. I would have preferred a Mike Brown type impact player in the 2nd round rather than a swing tackle candidate, depth piece, or future starter… Really would liked to have seen the RB position addressed early.

@Arnie — See — all you had to do was ask… My source was the same as I have consistently referenced, namely: NFL Mock Draft Database 2025 Consensus Big Board “This consensus big board of each player’s overall ranking for the 2025 NFL Draft was compiled using 199 Big Board(s),1,527 1st Round Mock Draft(s), and 1,533 Team Based Mock Draft(s). These numbers do not include ALL mock drafts in the database, but rather ones that are closest to the Draft date. Last Updated: 18 hours ago” ___________________________ The following “Big Board” data applies to the Bears draft selections of Day… Read more »

@TGena I’m not sure whose rankings of those two players you’re citing, but you have each ranked way lower than what I saw on ESPN and a few others. As far as “injury concerns”, I see where a game or two was missed here and there, but no shocking pattern, no significant time missed and no expectation of any long term issues. I’m sure you found what you cite somewhere, but I also think you probably looked really had to find something to use as fodder against Poles, even if was an outlier, because that’s just your thing. ESPN had… Read more »

A good trade down position wise and swing tackle needed to be upgraded. I think this will do that whether it was a reach or not.
But I’ll always wonder if Ozzy would still be around at 62 if the Bears had taken RJ Harvey at 56.
