The Chicago Bears, like most other teams, knew that Caleb Williams had unique talent after watching all of his game film from his three years of college. He didn’t win a Heisman trophy and set USC passing records by sheer dumb luck. Williams has the arm strength, accuracy, mobility, and improvisational skills necessary to thrive at the NFL level. What GM Ryan Poles, head coach Matt Eberflus and the team brass needed to figure out was whether he had the mental toughness, intelligence, and leadership qualities necessary to handle a high-pressure city like Chicago.
That is why his private visit to Halas Hall was critical. It would be his biggest chance to make an impression. How he handled the process would go a long way in determining whether the Bears should pull the trigger or consider an alternative. Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report is one of the top insiders on the national circuit. He received details of how the meeting went. From everything he’s gathered, not only did it go well, but Williams seems to have knocked it out of the park.

Every sign out there says the Bears plan to make him the #1 overall pick on April 25th. It is only a matter of turning in the card. Poles is obliged not to give everything away in public, keeping at least some semblance of uncertainty for television purposes. Still, anybody with common sense knows the real intrigue at this point starts with Washington at #2. Bears fans have already shifted their focus to what the team will do with their #9 overall pick. Will they add another receiver to further arm Williams or look to move down for more picks?
Either option will benefit the team. One thing is for sure. Caleb Williams is walking into arguably the best setup any #1 overall pick has ever had. Most teams that hold that spot are really bad, coming off the worst record in the NFL. Such is not the case with Chicago. They went 7-10, coming two ugly collapses away from making the playoffs. Their defense is already solid and they’ve spent the off-season adding more playmakers like Keenan Allen and D’Andre Swift. If Williams is as good as they say, he should have success right out of the gate.
