In Week 2, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were prepared to face a Chicago Bears team that they anticipated would be quite different from what they had watched in Week 1. Todd Bowles, who is in his second year as the Buccaneers head coach, shared with Dianna Russini of The Athletic that his team didn’t pay much attention to the way the Bears played against Green Bay. To their surprise, the Buccaneers found that the Bears stuck with their previous offensive strategy without making any significant changes.
“He (Bowles) told me he was very prepared on the defensive side of the ball for a mobile, athletic Justin Fields.. They Made him One dimensional“
This Is An Indictment On Luke Getsy
In the recent Hoge and Jahns podcast interview with Dianna Russini, it became apparent that Luke Getsy, isn’t effectively connecting with his quarterback, Justin Fields. This is evident from the fact that opposing defenses are still prepared for Fields’ mobility, even after the first week of the season. The league recognizes Fields dynamic running ability and for some reason Getsy no longer does.
What’s concerning is that Getsy has only called about four designed quarterback runs in the two games played so far this season. This is a wildly low number, and it’s not acceptable. Dianna pointed out that the Bears seem to be trying to mold Fields into a player he’s not, which is limiting his performance due to their coaching approach.
She suggested that the Bears should look at the blueprint the Panthers used with Cam Newton or even consider a plan similar to how the Ravens have used Lamar Jackson. This involves making the most of Fields running ability first and giving him more time to develop as a passer. However, what Luke Getsy is currently doing isn’t leading to positive results. He needs to make changes quickly, or there’s a real possibility that he could be replaced mid-season.
