The Chicago Bears are a team to watch now that the season is over. People are dying to know what fate awaits head coach Matt Eberflus and quarterback Justin Fields. Answers for the latter likely won’t come until March as GM Ryan Poles gets an idea of the quarterback landscape in the upcoming draft. As for Eberflus, the general feeling is we will know his status by the middle of this week once Poles and team president Kevin Warren get together for a deep discussion. However, the subject of offensive coordinator Luke Getsy may not need much of that.
Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune wrote about the Bears’ current situation in his latest column. He is uncertain what will happen with Eberflus, but he made it pretty clear what will happen with Getsy even if the head coach returns for another year.
“I believe if Eberflus makes it to a third season with the Bears, he would do so with two new coordinators. My hunch is Eberflus would call defensive plays next season if he’s back, and the offense really struggled at times this season and I doubt the blame is placed only on quarterback Justin Fields. Offensive coordinator Luke Getsy could be in a difficult spot. So a question the Bears will have for Eberflus is what kind of vision does he have for his staff in 2024. Does it impress them?”
Nobody will be surprised by this. Getsy never seemed like somebody who had good control of what he was doing. The offense lacked identity, never had good situational awareness, and ran plays it was never great at executing. They once again had one of the worst passing offenses in the NFL, finishing 27th.
Luke Getsy doesn’t seem to have much support.
While Eberflus has remained behind his embattled coordinator, the same can’t be said of the players. Reports indicate guys were frustrated with the play calling in Green Bay. D.J. Moore then added fuel to the fire by describing Getsy’s coaching as “fine” before stating it must be up to the players to execute. Talk about a lukewarm endorsement. It is hard to imagine Getsy getting another year. The only possible way is if the Bears decide to keep Fields, which would be purely for continuity purposes.

Most insiders, including Biggs, don’t see that happening. There will be one of two outcomes. Either Eberflus will stay, with Fields and Luke Getsy leaving, or they will all go. It is apparent Poles aims to reset the offensive situation regardless. He wants a new quarterback and a play-caller who will know how to get the most out of him. The only sticking point is whether they feel that the play-caller should be the head coach or if offensive coordinator is good enough. Either way, it sure sounds like the Getsy experiment is over.
