Bears vs. Bengals Week 9 Preview

-

Alright, here we go. Week 9. Bears. Bengals. A game with stakes bigger than the records show. Don’t let the 4-3 vs. 3-5 fool you — this isn’t some forgettable November scrap. This is a defining test for Caleb Williams and a dying gasp for the Burrow-less Bengals.

Let’s rip into it.

QB Matchup: Flacco’s Grit vs. Caleb’s Growing Fire

Joe Flacco is 40, busted shoulder and all, and somehow still the best quarterback on Cincinnati’s roster right now. That should tell you everything about the Bengals’ quarterback room. But to his credit, he’s slinging it. In three starts? 7 TDs, zero picks, 100.1 passer rating. The man’s not just a warm body out there — he’s actually winning them games (well, almost).

But let’s not ignore the obvious: Flacco’s shoulder is hanging on by duct tape, and he’s got the mobility of a traffic cone. Montez Sweat should be licking his chops.

Meanwhile, Caleb Williams is out here making the Year 2 leap look effortless — until the Bears hit the red zone. The dude’s cooking against pressure (136.3 rating vs. the blitz!) and dodging sacks like he’s Neo in The Matrix. He’s gone from 68 sacks last year to just 12 this year. That’s growth.

Problem is, once they sniff the end zone, the offense collapses into a puddle of field goals and frustration. Williams is 32nd in red zone success rate. That’s backup-tier stuff. You can’t be a playoff team if you keep settling for 3 inside the 20.

Defense: Bears Are Ball Hawks, Bengals Are a Dumpster Fire

Let’s call it what it is: Chicago’s defense is carrying the team. First in INTs (11), second in third-down defense (31.9%), and #1 in turnover margin at +10. Kevin Byard III is out here robbing fools weekly.

This defense doesn’t wait for mistakes — they create them. Dennis Allen and DB coach Al Harris are basically running a pickpocket operation out there.

Now flip it.

Cincinnati? Historically trash. Dead last in total defense, points allowed, and rushing defense. They gave up 254 rushing yards and a 15-point lead to the Jets — yes, the Jets. And now their best pass rusher Trey Hendrickson might miss this game? Yikes.

2025 NFL Defensive Statistics: Bears vs. Bengals

Where This Game Gets Won: In the Trenches & On the Ground

D’Andre Swift is the X-Factor.

Chicago’s found its rhythm with Swift running behind a retooled offensive line and Ben Johnson’s outside-zone-heavy scheme. Swift is averaging 4.6 YPC and is coming off multiple 100-yard games. Add in rookie Kyle Monangai as the hammer and Cincinnati’s run defense might just give up 200+ again.

This is a mismatch of Biblical proportions:

  • Bears rush offense: ascending
  • Bengals run D: 32nd, allowing 5.0 YPC
  • Outside zone? Bengals give up 5.9 YPC

If Swift plays — and that groin injury is no joke — expect a ground-and-pound clinic.

Air It Out: Odunze vs. a Crippled Secondary

Rome Odunze is cooking DBs and leading the Bears in receiving. He’s practicing in full, while the Bengals’ secondary is decimated. Marco Wilson’s questionable, and even if he plays, he’s gonna get torched.

Odunze’s 31 catches, 473 yards, and 5 TDs are no fluke. He’s top-20 in target share and route conversion. If DJ Moore and Luther Burden III are out or limited (doubt it), Odunze will be force-fed.

Williams needs to test this secondary early — and often.

2025 NFL Team Performance Radar: Bears vs. Bengals Across Key Categories

Key Stat to Watch: Turnovers, Baby

Let’s keep this simple:

  • Bears: +10 turnover margin (1st in NFL)
  • Bengals: -2 turnover margin (19th)

There’s your ballgame.

The Bears win when their defense sets the table. Against a 40-year-old Flacco with a dead arm and a porous O-line, expect takeaways. If they don’t come? This could turn into a slugfest.

Don’t Sleep on the Bengals Offense (Seriously)

We’ve been dragging Cincy’s D for good reason, but Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins can change a game in one snap. Chase has 720 yards and 5 TDs already. When Higgins is healthy, the whole passing game opens up.

The Bears are 25th in total defense and vulnerable to deep shots. If Flacco gets even decent protection (big if), Cincinnati could hang around just by going bombs-away.

The Coaching Edge: Johnson Is Up, Taylor’s On Life Support

Ben Johnson has already modernized the Bears offense and saved Caleb Williams’ life (literally). Zac Taylor, meanwhile, is on the hot seat — his team is soft, undisciplined, and can’t block to save their lives.

This is the type of game that cements narratives. A win, and Johnson proves he’s building a playoff-caliber team. A loss? You start hearing whispers about “same old Bears.”

For Taylor? Another L and he’s back to being Joe Burrow’s caddy.

Final Verdict

You win this? You’re legit. You drop it to a one-foot-in-the-grave Bengals squad missing Burrow, with the worst D in the league? Then you’re frauds.
How It Plays Out:

  • Chicago jumps out early with Swift pounding it down Cincy’s throat.
  • Flacco keeps it close with a couple of deep balls to Chase.
  • But the Bears force a key pick in the fourth and salt it away with a final scoring drive.

The Bears go to 5-3 and finally shake the ghost of last year’s collapse. The Bengals? They slide to 3-6, and the season’s all but dead.

This is a “prove-it” Sunday. And I think the Bears finally prove it.

Prediction: Bears 30, Bengals 24
