Bears Score Another Legit Target For Justin Fields

-

Ryan Poles has done some impressive work remaking the Chicago Bears’ offense over the past few weeks. It start with the acquisition of D.J. Moore from Carolina. Then he grabbed athletic guard Nate Davis from Tennessee. Now the GM has given a massive boost to the tight end position, adding former Packers standout Robert Tonyan. The interest isn’t hard to understand. He has direct ties to offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and knows the system the Bears run. He and Cole Kmet could forge a particularly dangerous tandem.

Tonyan was excellent in 2020 for Green Bay, going for 586 yards and 11 touchdowns. Unfortunately, his 2021 season ended after eight games with a knee injury. Still, he returned healthy last season with 470 yards and two touchdowns. He was third on the team in receiving. Tonyan brings a 6’5 frame, good speed, and strong hands to the table. He is still only 28 years old and didn’t miss a game in 2022. The Bears got themselves a legitimate offensive weapon for likely pennies.

Justin Fields should be a happy man right now.

The off-season isn’t even over yet and the Bears have completely revamped their list of receiving options. After having maybe two reliable targets last year, they now could have five.

  • Darnell Mooney
  • Chase Claypool
  • D.J. Moore
  • Cole Kmet
  • Robert Tonyan

If they can find a running back that is a threat in the receiving game, this could be Justin Fields’ year to ascend. Much of that depends on what they do along the offensive line. Davis was a good start, but they still need solutions at center and right tackle. Those are likely forthcoming in the draft. One source did indicate Tonyan was likely going to the New York Jets to reunite with Aaron Rodgers. It seems the Bears managed to convince him otherwise. Playing for his hometown team (he’s a McHenry native) and under a familiar face in Getsy likely sealed the deal.

Fields now has three targets 6’4 and taller. Combine them with speed threats like Mooney and Moore, it’s hard to imagine the Bears offense being easy to stop next season.

Filling holes with quality dudes allows the Bears to draft best player available. Good place to be in every year. The best run teams are always in this place.

Solid pick up.
