The Chicago Bears opener didn’t give fans many opportunities to laugh. Scoring three points in a loss will do that. However, those watching at home who were paying attention to their TVs closely may have gotten quite the unexpected rated TV-MA moment. It came late in the 2nd quarter. The Bears offense had just faltered again and were punting away. Al Michaels and Cris Collinsworth weren’t speaking at this particular moment.
Somebody controlling the microphones on the sideline must not have been pointing it in the right direction. That’s because as the punt got away, a player was heard clear as day uttering the phrase, “I’ve never had my butt fingered.” Michaels, true to form, didn’t acknowledge it outright but clearly chuckled before announcing the fielding of the kick. It was easily one of the brighter moments of an otherwise dull game.
It’s uncertain if the comment came from either the Packers or the Bears sidelines. Either way, it offered a keen insight into some of the crazy stuff players talk about on the bench. Or the crazier stuff that can happen in scrums down there on the field. Butt fingering would certainly rank high among the WTF moments. Suffice to say the Bears need to be better so the focus of these games for fans seeking positive moments aren’t reduced to getting chuckles from sideline conversations.
Chicago will head to Denver next week for a reunion class with Vic Fangio. That could end up being a problem given how the offense has struggled lately. Things may get worse before they better. Perhaps somebody in the Bears organization can bribe a mic man to keep it pointed at the bench up at Mile High.
