Bears May Have Their David Montgomery Replacement In Mind

-

The closer the Chicago Bears come to free agency, the more it becomes clear they might be preparing to move on from David Montgomery. GM Ryan Poles has repeatedly reiterated that he’d love to keep the veteran running back. He loves the talent and the character. However, actions speak louder than words. There has been no indication the Bears are anywhere close to locking up the former 3rd round pick. Five days remain before the start of free agency. He will likely hit the open market unless there is a last-minute change.

Some have already speculated about possible free agents Poles could target if Montgomery does leave. That doesn’t fit his profile. Don’t forget the GM has said multiple times he wants to build the Bears through the draft. Reports are the 2023 class is loaded with quality running backs. Why pay a veteran free agent when he could possibly find quality talent for cheap in April? In fact, they may have a name in mind. Running backs coach David Walker was spotted down at the Texas pro day, where he was paying special attention to Roschon Johnson.

Johnson makes sense if David Montgomery is out.

Most of the eyes at the event were for Bijan Robinson. Many feel the Longhorns star is one of the best running backs to come out of college in years. He will likely go in the 1st round. His success made it easy to overlook Johnson, who was a highly capable backup to him. He is 6’2 and over 220 lbs, averaging 5.6 yards per carry for his college career. His speed will keep him from going higher in the draft, but he runs with toughness, power, and consistency. Where he gains real value is his ability in pass protection and value on special teams.

The Bears have nobody on the roster capable of solid blitz pickup duties. David Montgomery was okay at it, but he was never anything special. Khalil Herbert is an outright liability. Adding Johnson as a complementary piece would strengthen the overall versatility of the position. His time at Texas in Robinson’s shadow also proves he is unselfish. The Bears actively seek out players like that. Either way, it’s apparent that this team has reached their decision on Montgomery. They will let him find a new home.
