Bears Mailbag -- Surprised That Bears Didn't Bring In A QB?

After a lot of speculation and wonderment about how the NFL would pull off a 100% virtual 2020 NFL Draft, they answered those questions brilliantly. The all-virtual event was brilliant, executed very well and providing fans intimate closeups of their home/family layout.

At the end of the weekend, the Bears had turned a no first-round pick situation, courtesy of the Khalil Mack trade, into an interesting, if not spectacular, draft haul.

They did pursue Ben DiNucci with an undrafted offer before he was drafted by Dallas in Round 7. Keep in mind, they may have pursued UDFA QBs who just decided to sign elsewhere.

But this was not a strong class. So I'm glad the Bears didn't reach.

I think drafting for need is a dangerous strategy, unless you have similarly graded players on your board. So if this is how their board fell, that's fine with me.

I don't love the Kmet value at 43, but I think he is a Day 1 contributor.

I can see the Bears being active in pursuit of Jefferson, now that the compensatory pick part of free agency is over.

I think the Bears are higher on their mix at RG (Ifedi, Bars, Coward, the OTs they drafted shifting to RG) than fans are, so I don't see them pursuing Osemele.

I think he has invested heavily in the safety position since he's been in Chicago. Some guys worked out, some didn't. Besides, with a FS like Jackson locked in, it's more important to have strong CBs. A good SS is nice to have, but you can get away with someone average.

Please note, whether the Bears' 2018 success was defensively driven or not, it was still Matt Nagy's success. He's the head coach. He's responsible for the whole team.

But yes, you can bet on seeing schematic changes in 2020, even though the failures were largely QB-driven.

As much as I would drool at the thought of Cutler coming back and leading Matt Nagy's team to the Super Bowl, he isn't coming back.

The TEs I see making the roster are Graham, Kmet, Harris, and Holtz.

I think it'll be a legitimate competition, but I don't see Trubisky winning unless his brain improves significantly. I don't mean that flippantly at all. He has to be smarter to run this offense.

He can contribute on Day 1. He has legitimate speed and plays as fast as he times. He can make tough catches, too. I love this pick.

1. Nagy needs a good U tight end, and Kmet is more of a traditional Y. But that TE still has value in this offense. Trautman clearly was not as valued as many thought he would be.

2. Johnson has better recovery speed.

He wasn't as good as the Bears thought he would be, plain and simple. They expected a dominant and strong presence. They did not get that.
