REPORT: Bears Choice For Allen Robinson’s Fill-In Is A Surprise

-

The injury report struck the Chicago Bears hard this week. Most of the problems lay on the defensive side. Khalil Mack is done for the year. So is Danny Trevathan. Akiem Hicks is out vs. Baltimore with an ankle injury. This made it easy to miss that wide receiver Allen Robinson is also unlikely to play due to the hamstring injury he suffered against Pittsburgh. A tough blow to an offense that has struggled to move the ball this season.

Nonetheless, the Bears had no choice but to move forward. They would need to bring somebody up from their practice squad to plug the gap Robinson’s absence would make. Most presumed the obvious choice would be Rodney Adams. The former Minnesota Vikings 5th round pick played well in the preseason and seemed to have a connection with Justin Fields. However, it appears the team has other plans.

Adams did not get the nod. Instead, it will be Isaiah Coulter.

Coulter is an interesting story. A former 5th round pick for the Houston Texans, he spent a year with that organization but was cut this past offseason. A byproduct of the team having a new front office and new coaching staff. Chicago scooped him up late in the preseason and he played in their finale against Tennessee. There he made a couple of catches. After a week, they waived him and eventually signed the 23-year old to the practice squad.

He attended Rhode Island where he had over 1,000 yards with eight touchdowns his final season there. At 6’3 he has solid size to go along with 4.45 speed. It is easy to see why the Bears were intrigued by him. Can he help fill the void left behind by Allen Robinson? That is what they want to find out. The team knows what they have in Adams. It appears they want to see if Coulter might be somebody worth keeping beyond 2021.
