Mitch Trubisky has said he’s not worried about Nick Foles as training camp draws near. His focus is on improving and getting ready for the 2020 season. The type of mindset that sounds smart. If he wants to ensure his spot with the Chicago Bears doesn’t end this season, he has to focus everything on making sure he wins the competition to come.
However, if there was a time for the quarterback to beg the coaching staff to at least let him start this season, it’s now. Every year is different in the NFL but the truth is Trubisky couldn’t have asked for a better setup in September. A slate of four games that lean heavily into where he seems to function best.
It starts against the Lions in Detroit, a team he’s owned the past two years with a perfect 3-0 record. Then it’s back home against the New York Giants. He beat them last year and they just underwent a significant overhaul of the coaching staff. It’s hard to imagine they’ll be anywhere close to settled in by Week 2 of the regular season. Follow that with a trip to Atlanta where the Falcons have featured a below-average defense the past two years. One that recently got gutted due to financial issues.
Last but not least is a battle at home against the Indianapolis Colts. A solid team but one that will be leaning on a 38-year old quarterback in Philip Rivers. Not to mention a defense that ranked 23rd against the pass. All four games will take place at noon on Sunday. No primetimes or late starts.

Mitch Trubisky is catching a lot of breaks this offseason
Truth be told, this offseason has been rather fortuitous for Trubisky. The COVID-19 pandemic has restricted travel across the country. This has prevented Foles from joining his teammates in Chicago. Meanwhile, Trubisky has worked out with his receivers and offensive linemen every week. This means he’ll have a major advantage in terms of chemistry with them once training camp begins.
Combine that with a reduced preseason, the odds of Foles winning the job outright continue to grow longer. It feels like the football gods are granting Trubisky the ideal scenario. A clear path to keeping his spot. Then an opening schedule that offers a prime opportunity to hit the ground running. If he can’t take advantage of that? Well, then people will have their answer once and for all about if he can be the guy or not.
