The Chicago Bears have remained steadfast regarding their offensive line most of the offseason. They’re satisfied with the additions they’ve made, even if most view them as on the cheaper side. They signed former Seahawks tackle Germain Ifedi to a minimum deal and will move him to guard. Then they grabbed Arlington Hambright and Lachavious Simmons in the 7th round of the draft.

Considering these guys are tasked with trying to replace Kyle Long on an offensive line that struggled a lot in 2019? It’s not hard to understand why a lot of people are concerned the team didn’t do enough. That being said, it’s never too late to add competition. GM Ryan Pace has proven this on many occasions during his tenure with the team.

He might feel compelled to act yet again. The New York Jets surprised a lot of people on Sunday when they announced the release of Brian Winters. The 29-year old guard was the longest-tenured member of their offensive line. He was playing really well in 2019, allowing just two sacks with one penalty in nine games. Sadly a dislocated shoulder ended his season.

He should be healthy now and has the sort of experience and skill set the Bears would like.

Chicago Bears should consider Winters at the right price

Yes, the Bears made a commitment to Ifedi but the reality is they’ve also made a commitment to roster-wide competition. Ifedi said he’s confident he’ll win the starting job. So why would he feel different if the team hedged their bets by adding Winters? It’s unlikely the veteran will be expensive to get with it being so late in the offseason and him coming off an injury.

His mixture of power, mobility, and nastiness would click with new offensive line coach Juan Castillo. What do the Bears have to lose at this point? They got some extra money to spend when Eddie Goldman chose to opt out of 2020. The offense will need to carry their weight this year. There’s no harm in picking up the phone.
