It seems the Chicago Bears are getting proactive in their pursuit of more depth at quarterback. This shouldn’t be a big surprise. Both Mitch Trubisky and Nick Foles have injury histories. Combine that with the risk of COVID-19 infection? It would make perfect sense to add a fourth QB to the mix alongside Tyler Bray.

Word came out a couple of days ago that the team was flying in North Texas standout Mason Fine for a tryout. Fine threw for over 12,000 yards in college and had a reputation for delivering in a lot of big games despite his shorter stature. However, he might not be the only one there. The Bears could be looking for a veteran option too.

According to rumors, the team is also bringing in Kyle Sloter for a tryout as well. An undrafted free agent in 2017, he was a backup for the Minnesota Vikings for two seasons before joining the Detroit Lions in 2019. During that time he’s built up a reputation as a preseason superstar but hasn’t yet gotten an opportunity to actually play.

Chicago Bears are wise to look into Kyle Sloter

Sloter is a fascinating story. He didn’t throw a single pass in two years for Southern Mississippi. At one point they even tried to move him to wide receiver. Then he transferred to Northern Colorado where he didn’t become the starter until his senior season. He threw for over 2,600 yards with 29 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Fairly impressive for his first actual playing time since the end of high school.

In his past two preseason runs, he’s been lights out with 809 yards, eight touchdowns and one interception on 98 passes. He has size, a strong arm, and throws with solid accuracy. He also has had a chance to learn from some really good coaches including Pat Shurmur and Darrell Bevell.

The man who might’ve pushed the Bears to bring him in is quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. The two worked together in 2018 when the coach was the offensive coordinator in Minnesota.
