Tyson Bagent got most of the buzz in the Chicago Bears’ second preseason game. For the one quarter of football he played, he was outstanding. The undrafted free agent went 9-of-10 for 76 yards with a touchdown run. Much of that came on a stellar 92-yard drive over 17 plays. His quick decision-making and precise accuracy were a huge part of his success. However, he had a lot of help from a fellow rookie. Running back Roschon Johnson was the workhorse on that drive.
Buzz had been building around the 4th round pick from Texas for weeks. He’s had a great training camp and showcased some of his ability in the preseason opener against Tennessee. Yet in this game, people saw what he could be for this offense. Johnson carried the ball seven times for 32 yards and caught a screen pass for 11 yards to convert a 2nd and 10. His vision, contact balance, and strength made him a difficult get on the ground for Indianapolis.
They were probably thrilled when the Bears decided to bench both players in the 2nd half.
The Chicago Bears must be happy with Johnson.
Their willingness to give him more reps with the starting offense in practice was a dead giveaway. Now he’s showing his undeniable intelligence and versatility in game action. Draft experts warned people overlooked Johnson too much because he was a backup his entire college career. None of that had to do with his ability. It was the case of getting trapped behind a superstar in Bijan Robinson. Johnson always had talent. He needed an opportunity somewhere to showcase it. Now the Bears are giving him one.

It is unlikely the rookie will overtake Khalil Herbert as the starter. He’s had too much success over the past two years to justify such a decision. However, D’Onta Foreman shouldn’t feel comfortable with his hold on the backup job. He didn’t play poorly against the Colts, but he also didn’t show the same multitool skill set. Johnson feels almost certain to get serious offensive snaps this season. The Chicago Bears have so many uses for him, especially in pass protection. The best part is he’s earning every bit of it.
