The Chicago Bears continue to have a weird off-season. Byron Pringle got things off to a rocky start when the wide receiver was arrested down in Florida for doing donuts on a street in his car with his young son in the back seat. Now it seems another teammate is taking the heat off him as linebacker Matthew Adams, brought over from the Indianapolis Colts, was arrested by police this week.
According to TMZ, the man was booked for misdemeanor unlawful use of a weapon — carrying/possessing a firearm. He was found close to a Jeep that had been reported stolen despite his claims he’d purchased the car. When it was searched, they found a loaded pistol in the trunk. While Adams does have a permit for it, the permit was not issued by the state of Illinois. It sounds like an extended series of unfortunate mishaps.

We’re told Adams — who signed a 1-year deal with the Bears in April — was questioned by cops around 6:45 PM after he was spotted near a Jeep that was reported stolen.
Adams allegedly claimed to have bought the car … but when cops searched the vehicle, they found a loaded handgun in the center console and an extended mag in the trunk.”

By the sound of things, Adams isn’t likely to suffer any severe punishment. The owner of the Jeep won’t press charges and the linebacker technically owns the gun in question. He merely failed to get a permit for it during his move to Illinois. The state has strict gun control laws due to violence issues. Such is not the case in Indiana where he likely purchased the weapon. This figures to be an adjustment he’ll have to make.

Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles and head coach Matt Eberflus will likely talk to him about being more careful. This city’s police force is touchy on subjects like this. Owning a gun is fine but he has to make sure he has paperwork available at all times and it’s up to date. Otherwise, mishaps like this happens. Adams is currently favored to make the roster as the Bears’ starting strong-side linebacker and a primary special teams ace.
Well, of course. Much more fun to bust a Bear than a gangster. Safer, too. Always go after the upstanding citizen. It’s a win-win for the cop.
What was the final determination on the reported stolen car. I didn’t read he was charged for that.
Matthew Adams is at fault here regardless of why or how he was stopped. As a responsible gun owner relocating to another state he alone was responsible for knowing the gun laws and making sure he was compliant with the Illinois law.
