Desperation is creeping in. The Chicago Bears had high hopes for this season. Justin Fields had support on offense. It was his second year in the same system. There was every reason to think he’d take a step forward at quarterback. The opposite has proven true. Not only is he still inconsistent as a passer, but he’s become remarkably less effective as a runner. Rumors have begun cropping up that the team brass may consider the drastic action of benching him if the slump continues. Fields himself has looked subdued in his public appearances lately.
It seems like a lost cause. However, that doesn’t have to be the case. The Bears have already proven they can make schematic adjustments to help Fields before. Maybe they can do it again. One obvious approach is working to get Fields back on the move. Find ways to utilize his athleticism. Ted Nguyen of The Athletic is a prominent tape analyst. After watching the Bears over the past couple of weeks, he had one idea that might help. They could bring in somebody with a deep background in elevating mobile quarterbacks.
Greg Roman would be a huge help to Justin Fields.
People around the NFL have mixed opinions on the former offensive coordinator. He’s been routinely excellent over the years at crafting deadly ground attacks. However, his passing schemes have also earned plenty of derision. One constant in his career is that mobile quarterbacks thrive under his watch. Colin Kaepernick went to the Super Bowl with him in San Francisco. Tyrod Taylor made the Pro Bowl in Buffalo under his watch. Lastly, Lamar Jackson became a league MVP when he arrived in Baltimore. Roman is a master at using a quarterback’s mobility to evolve the running game.
He could bring loads of great advice to Halas Hall. There is no conflict of interest. Roman was fired by the Ravens earlier this year. He’s unemployed, so it would only take a phone call for the Bears to bring him in. While he wouldn’t overhaul everything around Justin Fields, he could at least give them loads of tips on how to expand the playbook with plays related to weaponizing a quarterback’s legs. It’s not like the Bears have anything to lose at this point.
